User Manual

MagicWaits Display Devices — Complete reference for all features, settings, and troubleshooting. Covers both the Colour Touchscreen (TFT) and the E-Ink Display.

Throughout this manual, sections that differ between the two devices are clearly marked with TFT and E-Ink badges. Where no badge appears, the information applies to both.

Overview

MagicWaits displays connect to your home WiFi and automatically pull live data from your MagicWaits account at magicwaits.com. All settings are managed from any browser — your display picks up changes on its next data fetch.

First-Time Setup

The setup process is identical for both devices.

1

Plug in the device

Connect via USB-C to any phone charger, USB port, or power bank. The display will show a startup/WiFi setup screen.

2

Connect to "MagicWaits Setup"

On your phone or laptop, join the WiFi network called MagicWaits Setup. A setup page should open automatically. If not, go to 192.168.4.1 in your browser.

3

Enter your WiFi credentials

Tap Configure WiFi, select your home network, enter your password. Tap Save. The device reboots and connects. 2.4 GHz only.

4

Startup sequence

After connecting, the device syncs the clock and fetches your data. This takes 15–30 seconds. E-Ink: the screen will flash and refresh slowly — this is normal.

5

Log in to magicwaits.com

Visit www.magicwaits.com. Your username and password are on the label on the back of the device.

6

Activate your subscription

Press the flashing gold button to go to Choose Your Package. Your promo code allows you to choose any package for free. On the payment page, select "Promo Code or Add Code" to reveal the entry box and enter your promo code (found in your packaging). You won't be charged during your free period and can cancel any time. Payment is securely handled by Stripe. Make sure to enter your email address when prompted.

7

Select your parks

Select any number of parks your package allows. The number of available slots depends on your subscription tier. Press Save to continue.

8

Pick your rides

Under Ride Selection, choose the attractions you want to monitor. Each park is listed separately — tap the dropdown arrow to expand its ride list.

9

Customise your display zones

Go to the top right and left zones to further customise your display. You can make one selection per zone. Scroll down after each selection as new settings may appear (e.g. weather location). We recommend Holiday Countdown and Weather or Clock for first-timers.

10

WiFi Reset

TFT — Method 1: Screen Hold (15 s)

  1. At 0.7 s — data refresh fires
  2. At 3.7 s — amber banner: "Keep holding to reset WiFi"
  3. At 10 s — red banner: "WiFi resetting in 5s"
  4. At 15 s — WiFi cleared, device reboots

E-Ink — Button Hold (15 s)

Hold the button on the Waveshare driver board for 15 seconds. The device shows a confirmation on screen, then clears WiFi settings and reboots. A shorter hold (3 s) triggers a data refresh instead.

Auto-Refresh

The device fetches new data at a configurable interval (default: every 5 minutes). Shorter intervals are useful during park visits; longer intervals suit countdown-only use.

E-Ink note: Each automatic refresh triggers a full 10–30 second screen redraw. Setting a very short refresh interval (e.g. 1 minute) will result in the display almost continuously refreshing.

Both devices also perform a nightly reboot at 3:00 AM local time to stay healthy. The current view is restored after reboot.

Subscription

Live wait time data requires an active MagicWaits subscription, from just $2/month. Manage via magicwaits.com → Account → Subscription.

Free without subscription: countdown, weather, custom quotes, Yeti tracker.

Requires subscription: live wait times, Premier Pass / Lightning Lane pricing, boarding group status, single-ride panel.

Subscription tiers: Plans start from $2/month. Higher tiers unlock more ride slots and features. A promo code for complimentary time is in your box.

Troubleshooting

Setup screen appears on every boot

The device could not connect to the saved WiFi. The router may be offline, the password changed, or you're on a different network. Re-run WiFi setup.

FETCH ERR / No data displayed

WiFi is connected but the server couldn't be reached. Try a manual refresh (TFT: hold screen 0.7 s · E-Ink: hold button 3 s). If it persists, check your internet connection and power-cycle the device.

Clock shows wrong time

Check the Timezone setting. Common values: −5 (Eastern US), −6 (Central US), −8 (Pacific US), +0 (UK/GMT), +1 (Central Europe), +10 (Eastern Australia). Daylight Saving may require ±1.

Screen is very dim or slow to light up TFT

Try a different USB cable or charger. The TFT needs at least 500 mA.

Touchscreen registers random touches TFT

The resistive touchscreen can be affected by moisture. Clean gently with a dry soft cloth.

E-Ink screen takes a long time to update E-Ink

This is normal. E-paper displays require a full-panel refresh cycle that can take up to 30 seconds. The display will flash through several greyscale stages before settling on the final image.

Ghost / shadow image visible on E-Ink screen E-Ink

Ghosting (faint remnants of a previous image) is a normal characteristic of e-paper. It will clear on the next full refresh. If ghosting persists, power-cycle the device.

E-Ink screen is completely blank / white E-Ink

The display may have entered hibernate mode. Press the button once to trigger a view cycle and refresh. If the screen remains blank after 30 seconds, power-cycle the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the device without a subscription?

Yes — the countdown, weather, and quote panels all work without a subscription. Only live wait time features require an active subscription.

How often does the wait time data update?

The device fetches at your configured interval (default 5 minutes). The MagicWaits server fetches from park data sources approximately every 5 minutes, so data may be up to 10 minutes old in the worst case.

Does the device work outside the USA?

Yes. Parks supported include Disneyland Paris, Alton Towers, and others in addition to US parks.

Can I power the E-Ink display from a USB power bank?

Yes — the E-Ink device uses very little power. A 10,000 mAh power bank will typically last several days. Note: some power banks switch off when detecting a low-draw device. Choose one that stays on with low-current loads, or enable a "keep alive" mode if available.

Can I power the TFT from a USB power bank?

Yes, provided the power bank delivers 5V and at least 500 mA. Note some power banks switch off after detecting a low-draw device.

Can I wall-mount the E-Ink display?

Yes. The E-Ink display and its driver board are small and light. A small power bank taped to the back provides a completely wireless, wall-mounted installation. Use a power bank with a keep-alive feature to prevent it from switching off.

Why does the E-Ink screen flash when updating?

E-paper displays use a full-inversion refresh cycle to align the particles in the display medium. The flashing through black/white/grey stages is normal and ensures the best image quality.

Does the E-Ink display show the time?

Yes — the E-Ink display now has a working clock. Set panel mode 2 (or 10) on either panel, or switch to the Big Clock view (view 6). The clock uses a fast partial refresh every minute, so you won't see the usual 30-second full redraw each time. A full ghost-clearing refresh happens automatically every 30 clock updates.

What is High Contrast mode on the E-Ink display?

High Contrast mode inverts the display to white text on a black background. Enable it by setting LightMode to 0 in the control panel (0 = dark/high-contrast, 1 = normal light).

What is Bold mode on the E-Ink display?

Bold mode promotes the body fonts to larger, bolder variants for improved legibility. Enable it by setting Expansion1 to 1 in the control panel.
